A true easterner, Mrs. Laura Carter was raised 45 minutes outside of Pittsburgh in Butler, Pennsylvania and spent her summers in Misquamicut, Rhode Island. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts with a B.A. in German Studies. During this time she spent a winter semester studying, traveling and working in Germany. Upon graduating, Mrs. Carter spent a summer in Alaska working on a fish processing boat. She then rode her bike, along with three friends, across the USA from Seattle to Denver.
Soon after her bike trip she moved to Vail and began her 20 year career in the hospitality business, working for the Vail Resort Association, The Sonnenalp Resort, Destination Services of Colorado, and finally at the Roaring Fork Club after moving to Glenwood Springs in 2001.
Realizing her love of teaching, and with the support of her husband and son, Mrs. Carter garnered the courage to leave the hospitality business and pursue a new career as a teacher. She was hired at St. Stephen's in 2003, and became a 1st grade teacher. In 2004 she attended Regis University and obtained her Alternative Teachers License and began teaching 2 nd grade. In the spring of 2015 Mrs. Carter earned her Certificate as a Level I Catechist in the Catechism of the Good Shepherd. She reached her goal to become certified in all three levels in 2020.
Mrs. Carter continued her professional development at Notre Dame as a Hernandez Fellow in English as a New Language. Mrs. Carter is a member of the Colorado Chapter of International Reading Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and the National Science Teachers Association. Her interests include: biking, reading, gardening, hiking, music, and most of all, her family.
